Founded in 1994 by Peter McClellan and Sue Morgan, the wines of Wattlebrook Vineyard have already won trophy and medal recognition and are in the cellars of some of Australia's leading restaurants. Our philosophy is to make wines in the good vintages only, with the best hand-selected grapes and the finest oak when necessary to ensure premium quality.
Wattlebrook Vineyard lies west of Pokolbin in the lower Hunter Valley of NSW, where the village of Broke has earned itself a significant reputation as the centre of quality grape-growing in the Hunter. The grapes grown in the Broke-Fordwich appellation are keenly sought by major wineries as well as forming the basis of boutique wines which commonly win more medals at the Hunter Wine Show than those from any other part of the region.
Lying in a scenic valley formed by the Wollombi Brook and the Wollemi National Park, Wattlebrook Vineyard has 80 acres of grapes on prime land - 50 acres on volcanic soil from the Fordwich sill and 30 acres on sandy loam. It is fully developed with chardonnay, verdelho, semillon, cabernet sauvignon and shiraz vines.
The Broke property was complemented in 1998, with the development of 120 acres on Henry Lawson Drive at Mudgee. This vineyard will provide shiraz, merlot and cabernet sauvignon in premium years.
Wattlebrook Vineyard supplies most of its grapes to major wineries but each year keeps a small portion of premium grapes for its own wines. These are treated with special care and matured, where appropriate, in only the finest French and American oak.
It's that assurance of quality that allows the winelover to confidently serve Wattlebrook Vineyard wines to friends and family. By selling directly to the public, Wattlebrook Vineyard is able to offer its wines at prices considerably lower than the more widely-known, mass-market labels it has out-pointed at the wine shows.
